Earlier this spring, Seymourpowell produced a video with Dezeen editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs on affordable 3D printing and scanning. We also launched an online discussion on What are the opportunities and challenges of affordable 3D printing and 3D scanning?

But what of other latest news on 3D printing and 3D scanning technologies?

Shapeaways, a 3D printing marketplace and community, announced their new Custom Ring Creator app.

Another fashion innovation is the use of rubber as a material, according to i.materialise, a 3D printing service and community for designers & inventors that uses the world’s largest 3D printing facility. Rubber can be used for accessories, haute couture models, designs that need shock absorption, squeezable models, gadgets and functional designs.

For those of you that missed the ‘XYZ expo’ pop-up store experience in Amsterdam, 3D printer producer Ultimaker put out a video.

But is 3D printing the consumer revolution it’s really cracked up to be? In our LinkedIn group discussion, Square Banana Founder Russell Beard shared his blog post on the topic. “How can it evolve from the darkroom into instagram?” Russell points out.

Another member of our LinkedIn is James Woudhuysen, Professor of Forecasting and Innovation at De Montfort University, Leicester. James recently wrote an article on the question of “The right to bear 3D-printed arms.”

In his blog, Andy Sowards highlights 50 of the best 3D printed creations in his view.

In addition to being a commercial tool, 3D printing has applications in the classroom, according to Hod Lipson and Melba Kurman at Big Think. “What 3-D printing allows us to do is to accelerate the innovation process so that students can experience the entire product design and marketing from A-Z in one semester, within a period of maybe three months or less,” they say. But the technology isn’t limited to the university level. Manufacturing, math and  technology concepts can be taught to school children whilst 3D printing a batch of cookies.
